By far, one of the questions I get asked the most is “What should we wear”? There seem to be a lot of differing opinions among photographers. No bright prints! No white shirts! Etc. Here is what I prefer: just be you. If bright prints and patterns are what you love and they best express your personality, then go for it! However, if you normally wear simple solid color clothing and show up in something bright and loud – you will most likely be uncomfortable – therefore the portraits will reflect that. They will look awkward, and just “not you”. Because they’re not! Wear what you’re comfortable in, because the more at ease and relaxed you are, the better the portraits will turn out. The same goes for children. If your boy is used to wearing jeans and a t-shirt everyday and you force him into a sweater vest, your portraits will not make you happy! What should you do? Dress them in jeans or shorts and a nicer t-shirt with maybe a button down shirt with rolled sleeves and converse shoes or sandals.
DO:
Wear what you are comfortable in
Choose a color palette of 3-4 colors for family and group shots
DON’T:
Wash newly purchased clothes. There’s a crispness that’s lost after washing.
Wear tennis shoes
Have everyone wear the same thing! i.e. blue shirts with khakis. Mix it up. Layer, add another color, like orange. You get the idea.
